What Is A SafePal Cypher?

SafePal Cypher is a metallic board made of 304-grade stainless steel to protect your mnemonic phrase. It consists of two separate stainless steel plates that together make up a cryptographic puzzle and comes with a set of 288 letters. The recovery seed is assembled manually and it is extremely easy to operate. Both sides of the SafePal Cypher plates can store 12, 18, or 24 words.

Important Tips Before Using A SafePal Cypher

SafePal Cypher is a tool to protect your mnemonic phrase against fire, water, and corrosion. Since a mnemonic phrase is the proof of ownership of your crypto assets, once someone gets hold of your mnemonic phrase or private key, they can practically take full control of your assets. Therefore, after recording the mnemonic phrase on your SafePal Cypher, don't forget to keep it and the remaining parts in secure locations.

How To Set Up The SafePal Cypher

1. Slide counterclockwise to open the SafePal Cypher. 2. Use the screwdriver provided in the box to unscrew the five screws shown in the picture below, and insert the letter tiles in the slots provided. 3. Find the corresponding stainless steel letter tiles and place them in their respective slots based on your own mnemonic phrase. Insert the first four letters of each word.(If you encounter a 3-letter mnemonic, you can fill the empty space with the blank side (reverse) of the letter tile.)

Tips: The character blocks "b" and "q", "d" and "p", "n" and "u" can be used interchangeably. Please keep the unused letters in the secure location as well because others might figure out which letters are used and reverse the mnemonic phrase.

FAQ

1. Why are there only four slots for each word?

The SafePal Cypher is based on the BIP39 Mnemonic Phrase Standard that is used to generate the mnemonic keys. It is a specific list of 2048 English words that has been carefully curated so that each of the 2048 mnemonic words can be identified by its first four letters. That’s why the SafePal Cypher has only four-letter slots. If a word has just three characters, use the back of a letter tile to fill in the space.

2. How do I retrieve the complete word based on the first four letters?

Each empty slot of the SafePal Cypher can be placed in 4 letter slots. According to BIP39, the first 4 letters of each word in the mnemonic list are different. That is, four letters can be used to represent a unique mnemonic. If you encounter a 3-letter mnemonic, you can fill the empty space with the blank side (reverse) of the letter tile. You can view the 2048 mnemonic list here.

3. What should I do if the letters provided are not enough?

The number of letter tiles provided by the SafePal Cypher is calculated based on the probability that each letter will appear in the mnemonic list. However, a small probability that a certain letter is not enough does exist. You can solve the problem via the following methods:

  • The character blocks "b" and "q", "d" and "p", "n" and "u" can be used interchangeably. Interchange these letters and see if the problem is resolved.

  • Use the blank side of a letter tile instead.

  • Generate new mnemonics and assemble. (The probability that the character block is not enough again is almost zero.)

4. How hot can a SafePal Cypher withstand?

SafePal Cypher is made of 304 stainless steel. The material is resistant to temperature up to 1400-1450°C, making it effectively fire-resistant.
